What the Table Shape Decides
This matters more than which category you started out wanting.
Round
A single centered chandelier or statement pendant is the simplest read. Either keeps the shape of the table intact.
Square

Rectangular

The Two Numbers That Matter
A 40 inch table points to roughly a 28 inch fixture. For ceilings taller than 8 feet, add about 3 inches of extra clearance per additional foot.
