Is it weatherproof?

Yes, it's made for outdoor use. Check the IP rating on this page: IP44 suits covered spots like porches and under eaves, while IP65 handles direct rain on fully exposed walls.

What size do I need, and how high should it go?

As a guide, choose a light about one quarter to one third the height of the door it sits beside. Mount it around 66 in (168 cm) from the ground, or just above eye level.

On a wide facade or garage, a larger fixture or a pair either side of the door keeps things balanced. Full dimensions are listed on this page.

Do I need an electrician?

For hardwired lights, yes. They connect to your exterior wiring, so we recommend installation by a licensed electrician, who'll also make sure the connection is properly sealed against the weather. Solar lights don't need wiring or an electrician.

Does it switch on automatically?

Some outdoor lights include a motion or dusk-to-dawn sensor, and if this one does, it's listed on this page. Otherwise it runs from your wall switch, and your electrician can add a sensor or timer.

After comparing quite a few outdoor fittings, I chose this for the simple linear design. We installed it horizontally on the patio wall, and it suits the space nicely. The warm light is pleasant in the evening without making the fitting look overly decorative.

Before replacing our old light, I hadn't thought much about how the shape of a fitting affects the wall around it. The linear design of this one gives the patio a more organised appearance. We went with horizontal mounting because it worked better with the space. I also preferred the warm light to the cooler tone we had previously. The stainless steel body feels reassuring when handled, although the appearance was my main reason for choosing it. It hasn't changed the entire patio, but it has made that particular wall look much more considered.

Finding the right light for the back doorway meant balancing the look of the fitting with the atmosphere we wanted after dark. This stood out because it has a simple black body and warm lighting rather than a very decorative shape. The stainless steel construction was another detail I liked when comparing options. We kept the surroundings fairly restrained, which lets the linear design work without competing with much else. I wouldn't say a single light transforms an entire exterior, but it has made this corner feel much more finished and inviting

Initially I was mostly interested in the appearance, but the dimming has been useful too. Our electrician paired it with a compatible Triac dimmer. We tend to keep it lower when sitting outside. Its a nice option to have rather than one fixed brightness.
