As a general guide, IP44 suits covered or sheltered positions, while IP65 is rated for fully exposed conditions including direct rain.
The base of the pillar light should sit comfortably within the footprint of the post or column it mounts on — ideally no wider than the top surface. For standard brick or stone pillars, a base between 6 and 10 inches suits most residential applications. For larger statement columns, a wider base or lantern-style cap works best.
