What size do I need, and how high should it go?

As a guide, choose a light about one quarter to one third the height of the door it sits beside. Mount it around 66 in (168 cm) from the ground, or just above eye level.

Do I need an electrician?

For hardwired lights, yes. They connect to your exterior wiring, so we recommend installation by a licensed electrician, who'll also make sure the connection is properly sealed against the weather. Solar lights don't need wiring or an electrician.

A few small changes to our porch made me realise how out of place the old wall light looked. I wanted the replacement to have some character rather than disappear into the background.
